Nadia BENOIS 1896 — 1975Надя БЕНУА • Надежда Леонтевна БЕНУАNadia Benois (Nadezhda Leontevna Benois), a niece of the great Russian designer Alexandre Benois, was born in St. Petersburg in 1896. A fine artist and designer of theatre productions, she was a great supporter of Marie Rambert’s activities at the Ballet Club. She studied in New Art Studio in Petrograd and at Petrograd Free Art Education Studios in 1918-1919 under Jacovleff (Iacovleff), Choukhaieff and her uncle Alexandre Benois. In 1921 she settled in Britain and continued her career as a painter with a number of successful exhibitions. Nadia Benois painted still life and landscape, and stage designer. First one-man exhibition at the Little Gallery, the Adelphi, 1924. Exhibited with the N.E.A.C. from 1929; member 1937–41. Her pictures are now owned by many prestigious galleries including the Tate, the Carnegie Institute and the National Gallery of New Zealand. The artist died in Gloucestershire, England in 1975. |
