Born in Kharkiv region. 1928-1931 studied at Kharkiv Art School, 1931-1935 in the Kharkiv Art Technical School, 1940 graduated from the Kyiv Institute of Art. Studied in the studio of M. Krychevsky, M. Sharonov, F. Krychevsky, D. Shavykin. Volobuyev introduced lyrical trends to his social realism landscape and still life paintings. He was called “Ukrainian Chardin” by Mykola Hlushchenko.
