Aleksey Stepanov was born in 1858 in Simferopol. Studied at the Moscow College of Art, Sculpture and Architecture (1880-1884) in the studio of I. Prianishnikova. Landscape and genre painter, illustrator. Lived in Moscow. Traveled up the Volga and Oka rivers together with I. Levitan in 1888. Also traveled to the North of Russia. One of the initiators of “Exhibition of 36 artists”. Taught at the Moscow College of Art, Sculpture and Architecture (1899-1918). His students were L. Turshanski and B. Yakovlev.
