| Ilya KABAKOV 1933 — Ілля КАБАКОВ • Илья Иосифович КАБАКОВIlya Iosifovich Kabakov was born in Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine in 1933. A conceptual artist of Russian-Jewish origin. Moved to Moscow in 1945 where he graduated from the Moscow Art School in 1951 and from the Surikov Art Institute in 1957, department of graphics. Ilya Kabakov was a leader of the Moscow Conceptual School in the Soviet unofficial art movement. After working as an illustrator of children’s books, he started experimenting in combining word and image. Kabakov began his experimentation with word and image in his albums, which he started developing in the spring of 1972. It allowed him to add the ‘fourth dimension” – time – into his work. The artist showed his albums, composed of similar-sized sheets housed in folders, to groups of four to ten people at a time. The viewer was to turn the pages one by one, which by idea was similar to viewing a theatrical performance. He now lives and works on Long Island. |
