Osip BRAZ 1872 — 1936Йосиф БРАЗ • Осип Эммануилович БРАЗOsip (Josif) Emmanuilovich Braz was born in Odessa, Ukraine in 1872. Studied at Odessa Drawing School in the studio of K. Kostandi (1890-1894); in private studio and at Academy of Arts, Munich in 1890-1891; in Holland and Paris in 1893-1894. In 1895 the artist entered St. Petersburg Art Academy where he studied in the studio of I. Repin. Active in St. Petersburg until 1928. Lived in France in 1907-1911. Braz became an academician at St. Petersburg Art Academy in 1914. Was in exile in Novgorod in 1924-1926 but freed after appeal by Leningrad artists. Moved to Paris in 1928. Specialized in portraits. Taught in own studio in St. Petersburg from the end of 1890’s. Worked as a restorer in the Hermitage in 1917-1928. Moved to Berlin in 1928 and later to Paris. Became an antique dealer in Paris from 1928. Braz is know for painting the only finished portrait of Anton Chekhov during the writer’s lifetime (1897-1898). Died in Paris in 1936. |
