Alexander (Yitzhak) FRENEL 1899 — 1981Александр ФРЕНЕЛЬ • Александр ФРЕНЕЛЬAlexander Frenel was born in 1899 in Odessa, Ukraine into a Jewish family. In 1917 he studied under Alexandra Ekster at the Art Academy in Odessa. In 1919 he immigrated to Israel. In 1920, he established the artists` cooperative in HaTomer in Jaffa as well as an artists` studio in Herzilya. Later that year Frenel traveled to Paris where he studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and at the Grande Chaumiere at the studios of Bourdelle and Matisse. In 1925, Frenel returned to Israel where he established the studio of painting of the Histradut in Tel Aviv. After staying in Paris for five years he setteled in Safed in 1934 where a museum of his paintings was opened in 1973. He participated at the Venice Biennale in 1950 and an important solo exhibition was held at Orangerie in Paris in 1979. He died in Tel Aviv in 1981, and was buried in Safed. |
