Attended Kyiv Drawing School and since 1896 studied at the Moscow College of Art, Sculpture and Architecture under Konstantin Korovin and Valentin Serov. In 1904 graduated with silver medal from the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, where he studied under Stanislaw Wyspianski, and Yu. Mekhoffer. Lived in Chernihiv (1905-1917, and 1919-1925) and in Odesa (1925). Began exhibiting in 1903. Since 1905 taught at the Chernihiv Seminary. Wrote short stories and theoretical essays; illustrated periodicals; portraitist. Cofounder and professor of Ukrainian State Academy of Art in 1917-1919; professor at Odesa Art branch of Association of Artists of Red Ukraine in 1920s. Portraitist of Ukrainian cultural leaders such as Ivan Franko, Volodymyr Sosiura, Pavlo Tychyna, and Natalia Uzhvii. Made ceramic designs for the Dulevo and other factories in 1937-1939. Died in Odesa in 1964. |
