Marianne WEREFKIN 1860 — 1938Мар`яна ВЄРЬОВКІНА • Марианна Владимировна ВЕРЕВКИНАMarianne von Werefkin (also known as Marianne von Werefkin) was born in Tula in 1860. She was a Russian-Swiss Expressionist painter. In 1880 she became a student of Ilya Repin. In 1892 Werefkin met Alexej von Jawlensky with whom she moved to Munich in 1896. Werefkin created her first expressionist works in 1907 using the style of "surface painting". At the outbreak of the World War One Werefkin and Jawlensky moved to Switzerland where they settled nearby Geneva and later to Zurich. In 1918 Werefkin separated from Jawlensky and moved to Ascona on Lago Maggiore. In 1924 she founded the artist group "Großer Bär". In her later years, she painted posters. Werefkin friends "Carmen" and "Diego Hagmann" protected her from poverty. The artist died in 1938 and was buried at the Russian cemetery in Ascona. |
