Nikolai Smirnov was born in Moscow in 1938. After completing his education in Art History he started painting at the age of 39 establishing a separate movement entitled “historical still life.” Main subject of Smirnov’s works is the history of Russian culture reflected in painting objects of the past times. The artist was not a member of any formal or non-conformist groups. He died in Moscow in 2005.
