Avant-garde painter, decorator and theorist. In 1890-1898 studied art privately and worked at the theatre decoration shop. Moved to Moscow, where he entered the Stroganov Art College. Graduated from the Stroganov Art College in 1907. As a student met Larionov and the group of his followers. Adapted neo-primitive style under the influence of Larionov. Wrote a book called “Neo-primitivism. Its theory, possibilities and achievements” (Moscow, 1913). “Principles of Cubism and other movements in art of all times and nations” (Moscow, 1913). In 1914 was mobilized into Russian army, where he served until 1917. After the revolution became active with the “Narkompros”; Member of the board of the preservation and restoration committee (1918-1920). Taught at Vchutemas-Vchutein from 1918. Exhibited from 1904. Died in Moscow in 1948. |
