Contributed to the Third Exhibition of Paintings by Artists from Kaluga and Moscow held in Kaluga in 1925 and also exhibited at the Paris Salons. In 1927 he was sent to Paris on the recommendation of Lunacharsky where he sculpted many of the luminaries of the time including Anna Pavlova, and in 1932 had a one-man show. Sceptical of the reports of oppression in Russia that reached him in Paris, he returned home only to be arrested in 1938, accused of participating in an attempt on Stalin`s life. Condemned to five years hard labor, he was subsequently subject to internal exile and was rehabilitated only in 1954. Died in 1991. |
