Studied in art studios, Odessa in 1906; in Vienna and Paris at the Academie Vitti in 1906-1912. Active in Odessa until 1906; Paris in 1906-1917; Petrograd in 1917-1918; Moscow thereafter. He exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon d’Automne and interacted with artists who gathered at Café Rotonde. Among his friends were Chaim Soutine, Jacques Lipchitz, and Guillaume Apollinaire. In Shterenberg paintings static objects become animated through his dynamic use of color and form. The artist emphasized the purity of form, free from political or social overtones. He was an influential art activist in first years after the October revolution of 1917. Died in Moscow in 1948. |
