Yefim Moiseevich Royak (Rayak) was born in Vitebsk in 1889 (or 1906). Studied at Y. M. Pen’s studio-school Vitebsk; Vitebsk Higher Art School where he studied with Marc Chagall in 1919-1922. Active in Vitebsk until 1922; Petrograd in 1922-1927; Moscow from 1927. Was a student of Kazimir Malevich and introduced elements of Suprematism into his graphics, paintings, and collages. Member of UNOVIS (Affirmers of the New Art) group. Exhibited at Die erste russische Kunstausstellung in 1922 and the Exhibition of Pictures of Petrograd Artists of All Directions in 1923. Royak collaborated with El Lissitzky on an entry for a design competition. Contributed to architectural projects of the Vesnin brothers in 1934-1941. Also a graphic artist. Died in Moscow in 1970.
