Studied landscape painting at St. Petersburg Art Academy in the studio of M. Klodt and V. Orlovsky (1876-1885). For his painting At Donetz River received a golden award and a grant to travel to Western Europe. After his return Vasylkivsky traveled in Kharkiv and Poltava regions, down Dnipro river to Zhaporizzha. Vasylkivsky painted landscapes, portraits, historical, and genre paintings. After his death Vasylkivsky left almost 3,000 paintings, half of them at the Kharkiv Art Museum. A great number of his paintings were lost during World War II and only about 500 are now in museum and private collections. |
