Alexei Korin studied icon painting at Palekh. He was a schoolmate and friend of Ivan Kalmykov at the Moscow Art Institute, taught by Kakovsky and Pryanishnikov. His debut painting, The Sick Artist, was purchased by Pavel Tretyakov. At the turn of the century, Korin created a series of canvases reaching the summit of Russian psychological portraiture. Works of the artist are kept in the Tretyakov Gallery and the Russian Museum.
