A Polish painter, famous in the Russian Empire, representative of salon academism of the XIX Century. He was noted for his paintings on the subjects of Ancient Rome. He studied at the St. Petersburg Art Academy in the studio of V.P. Vereschagin and P.P.Chistiakov in 1876-1881. Upon graduation received the title of a painter and a scholarship to study abroad for five years. Bakalowicz traveled to Poland first, where he met Jan Matejko, then to Paris, where Bakalowicz worked during 1882-1883. Since 1883 lived in Rome. Bakalowicz exhibited in St. Petersburg with the last such exhibition taking place in 1914. There is no record about Bakalowicz in Russia after 1921. The artist died in Rome in 1947. |
