Vassyl KHMELUK  1903 — 1986

Василь ХМЕЛЮК • Василий ХМЕЛЮК

Born in 1903 in the village of Berezivka, near Zhmeryanka. Ukrainian painter. Studied at Krakov Art Academy (1921-1923) in the studio of Yaronsky. Visited Prague in 1921 where he later studied at Karlov University (1926-1927). In 1926 Khmeluk published a book “Hin” (Гін) with his poetry. In 1930’s moves to Paris where he held his first exhibition at the Galerie de L’Atelier Francais in 1931 along with Mykola Kryczewsky and Vasyl Perebeinisse. In 1959 Khmeluk married his Spanish model, Marie. The same year they both moved to a famous artistic house Monmartre aux Artistes. In 1972 the artist exhibited in New York. Khemluk was inspired by work of Francisco de Goya and French expressionist Georges Rouault (1871-1958). The artist died in Paris in 1987.
