Maria Bashkirtseff (Maria Bashkirtsceva) was born in the village of Havrontsy, near Poltava, Ukraine in 1860. Since 1870 she lived in Western Europe and studied in a private art academy of R. Yulian during 1877-1878. She painted a total of over 150 paintings, studies, drawings best of which were acquired by French museums. She received fame for her diary, which was published posthumous. Bashkirtseff died in Paris in 1884.
