Nikolai CIKOVSKY 1894 — 1987Микола ЦІКОВСЬКИЙ • Николай ЦИКОВСКИЙNikolai Cikovsky was born in Pinsk, Minsk province in 1894. Studied at Vilnius drawing school. In 1913, along with Soutine, Kremen and others, withdraw from the school to protest the conservative teaching methods and entered the Penza art school. In 1919 served in the Red Army as a painter-agitator. In 1921 entered the VCHUTEMAS in Moscow, where he studied in the studios of P. Kuznetsov, I. Mashkov and V. Favorsky. In 1923 moved to the United States of America where he settled in New York. Cikovsky was a friend of Bulriuk. In America Cikovsky first painted cubistic compositions. Also painted a series of New York cityscapes. In 1931 and 1932 exhibited in the New York gallery Daniel. The artist also exhibited in Chicago, Philadelphia and Los Angeles. Overall Cikovsky participated in 20 exhibitions in the United States of America. In 1965 he received a PhD from Harvard University. In 1970 became a director of the Texas Art Museum in Austin. He died in 1987. |
